Prostitution on the Rise in Gitega

Kigali, Aug 17, 2005 (The New Times/All Africa Global Media via COMTEX) --Residents of Kinyanye Cell, Gitega Sector, of Nyarugenge District have decried a rampant increase in prostitution in the area.

In a recent interview with one of the area residents only identified as Karoli, he said prostitution had hampered many development activities in the area

He added that there was a proportionate increase in the crime rate.

A prostitute only identified as Donatha, told this reporter that she preferred to sell her body to survive, adding that she had no other alternative means to earn a living .

When contacted, the officer in charge of security in the area, Paul Asina said, "We do try to fight and reduce prostitution in the area but we still get more challenges because these prostitutes have joined forces with ruffians thus causing insecurity in the area.

He said that the government was always willing to assist the poor, noting that they needed to first form associations to channel all the necessary support.

During his visit in the area mid last month, the Mayor of Nyarugenge District, Augustine Kampayana promised to assist people to put up a micro-finance project that would assist them to start small scale businesses as a solution to curbing poverty.
