ATHENS, Greece_Police in Athens arrested one man and issued warrants for four other suspects accused of torturing Nigerian women to force them to work as prostitutes.

Authorities, who did not identify any of the suspects, said Friday that police freed three Nigerian women, from Lagos and Benin City, who had burns inflicted with an iron and boiling water.

The women were taken to a shelter run by a charity that helps abused women.

The arrested man was charged with being a member of a criminal gang, people-trafficking and money-laundering.

Police raided several downtown apartments and hotels before announcing the arrest. They said the women were lured to Greece on promises of legitimate work but were later told they had to work as prostitutes to pay off a transfer fee of €50,000 (US$62,250).

Authorities estimated about 30 women had been abused by the gang.
